Malawi lauds strong bilateral ties as China aids MK150m towards emergency responses: Lunar New Year Celebration

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Chaponda, has commended the growing bilateral relationship between Malawi and China, describing it as mutually beneficial and vital to Malawi’s development.

Chaponda made the remarks on Sunday evening at the Golden Peacock Hotel in the capital Lilongwe, where he attended as guest of honour during celebrations marking the Chinese Lunar New Year.

He noted that China has consistently supported Malawi across key sectors, including infrastructure development and education, among others.

Chaponda expressed optimism that the continued partnership will help Malawi achieve greater economic independence and long-term self-reliance.

In an interview with Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, said the Lunar New Year celebration symbolizes renewed hope and strengthened cooperation between the two nations.

As part of the celebrations, China presented a cheque worth K150 million to support the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in enhancing its emergency response initiatives.

The event was also attended by Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito, Minister of Agriculture Roza Fatch Mbilizi, Minister of Mining and Energy Jean Sendeza Mathanga, and Lilongwe Mayor Alex Banda, among other dignitaries.
