Police in Chitipa on Sunday morning confiscated 300 metric tones of maize that was being smuggled to Tanzania.
Northern region police spokesperson Peter Kalaya, confirmed this to The Maravi Post and said the police have also intercepted 17 trucks in process.
He said the owners of the trucks are yet to be identified.
“We suspect that the trucks are of some business community members but as of now what I can confirm is that we have confiscated 17 trucks loaded with maize,” said Kalaya.
Kalaya further said that the police suspect the smugglers use uncharted roots at Ilimba border post in Chitipa and Songwe in Karonga.
It is believed that most of the maize smugglers are from Karonga district and allegedly act in conjunction with some senior politicians and security officers.
According to information sourced by this reporter, a 50 kilograms bag of maize is being sold at K18,600 in Tanzania.
