LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As suicide cases are on the rise, Malawi Police Services (MPS) is set on vigorous sensitisation campaign for the community to start banking on Victim Support Unit (VSU) as a shoulder for suicide victims.
National Police Publicist Peter Kalaya said this on Monday during Ministry of Unity pabwalo platform engagement forum in Lilongwe.
Kalaya admitted that most people are not aware that VSU offers support on mental health issues.
Kalaya said police embarked on sensitisation campaign through fliers and other modules to reach out to the community.
“We understand that people regard VSU as a marriage counseling entity only that’s why we are embarking on a campaign of sensitisation the community it’s roles ‘” said Kalaya.
He said currently from January to December this year cases have rised compared to last year as it seem as a tradition for individuals.
On his part, Director of Civic Education Misheck Munthali said his ministry will join hands with police to sensitize Malawians where to report cases of suicide.
Munthali said the ministry take an active role in enlightening the citizens of this nation
about the state obligations, as well as
about citizen responsibilities towards those obligations.
On civil society point of view,Youth and society, Project officer Mwandida Theu said pabwalo platform is helping the sensitisation campaign of different issues that are key to the well being of people helping the work of CSOs
Theu said the platform has helped people to come together and voice out issues which could have taken life or cause dispute.
Meanwhile suicide cases are on the high speed in the country as everyday they are report of suicide.
