2 Min Read

Malawian soldier Lieutenant Connell Desmond Chawanda has made a historic donation of assorted items ranging from food to non food commodities wealth MK450, 000, to Adziwa orphanage in a bid to ease the centre’s food shortages.

The donation comes amid pressure the institution was encountering in meeting children’s daily food uptake due to large number of orphans the centre was keeping which surpassed its source of income.

The orphanage with the capacity of 568 children and located near the city centre, in the capital Lilongwe received items from the Connell Chawanda including 40 bags of maize, 5 bales of sugar,4 bales of salt,4 cartons of Butex Soap,4 cartons of U- fresh Soap,3 Cartoons of Vaseline and 6 pigs.

Speaking to The Maravi Post this week aftermath of the donations, Chawanda said his family decided to donate to the orphanage after realizing the pressure the orphanage was encountering due to large number the institution was keeping which does not much with its income sources.

He said the food items donation might ease such a food burden and pressure for sometime while he intending to solicit more funding for the orphanage hence appealing to well-wishers for more support to institution which has a day care, primary and secondary school.

“The food and non food items offered to the children will ease the pressure the centre experiences while we will be sourcing some funds to do more towards unprivileged. We can’t leave the duty of taking care of orphans to government alone or always waiting for foreigners for help.

“Together we can make a difference and Malawi a better place to leave hence calling other well-wisher to do more towards the children needs”, urges Connell Chawanda.

Speaking after receiving the donation, Moses Chimangeni, the Orphanage’s Chairperson, expressed gratitude to the timely assistance saying items would ease food shortage at his institution.

“Although, we are located close to the elite areas of 10, 12 and 43, where well to do people stay but no one has made such lucrative donation apart from our law maker usually comes for our rescue in time of trouble. Therefore, we are urging them to emulate the kind gesture Connell Chawanda has demonstrated to organs”, appeals Chimangeni.

Meanwhile, the orphanage is experiencing acute shortage of water as Lilongwe Water Board disconnected water supply to the entire institution due to unpaid bill amounting to MK268, 350 which occupants have resorted sourcing water using buckets from boreholes far from the orphanage.

Chimangeni confirmed the development to The Maravi Post saying the his institution was seeking for well-wishers to came again to their rescue on the accumulated water bills which has led to water supply disconnection as there is fear of water borne disease occurrences.

With the support from Capital City Baptist Church, Adziwa orphanage was opened in 2001 in order to serve unprivileged children through provision of physical, psychological, spiritual support.
