Lilongwe, March 3, 2016: Government’s plans to establish a National School of Government which will be used as part of career development tool for civil servants are at an advanced stage, the Maravi Post has learnt.
Speaking during a meeting with heads of sectors for Lilongwe District Council, councillors and Members of Parliament for Lilongwe, Jennifer Mjuweni who is Deputy Director responsible for Planning and Monitoring in the Public Sector Reforms Commission said the school was part of the public sector reforms aimed at bringing sanity in government.
“The school will be modelled on the Kenya School of government and will be a result of a merger between Malawi Institute of Management [MIM] and Staff Development Institute [SDI].
“It will also award certificates to those who qualify and this will determine career progression,” said Mjuweni.
Mjuweni said her office planned to have centres in all three regions of the country to enhance accessibility to the school of government.
“We are currently working of the structure of the national school of government. We are also looking for a place in the northern region where we can have a centre,” she said.
“We believe the school will ensure that government has competent employees.”
Member of Parliament for Mpenu Nkhoma, Collins Kajawa welcomed the idea of having a National School of Government but recommended that it should be part of existing public universities.
Kajawa said: “One would think that National School of Government would be incorporated into already existing public universities to avoid unnecessary duplication.
“I recommend the introduction of a Faculty called National School of Government, say within the University of Malawi [Unima]. Those working at MIM and SDI can be transferred to Unima.”
