Malawi Traffic Officers warned against ‘Kugula Njira’ bribes, corrupt practices

Malawi Traffic Officers

Eastern Region Police has warned its Traffic Police Officers that it will arrest and prosecute any officer that will be implicated in corrupt practices and receiving bribes from road users.

Police Commissioner, responsible for the region, Happy Mkandawire sounded the warning on Monday, 10 May 2021 when he met with traffic police officers from Zomba Police and the region’s headquarters at Police College in Zomba.

Mkandawire observed that unverified reports show that some officers receive bribes from motorists, mainly taxi operators in Zomba in the name of “Kugula Njira” (owing the road) so that they should be stopped by the law enforcers.

The Police Commissioner said such reports are denting the image of the security agency and proceeded to warn them against the vice, saying his office will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute law officers implicated in the malpractice.

“You need to work professionally by rejecting bribes and arresting all those who want to bribe you, but if you entertain bribes, you will face the law.

“The traffic section should not be used as an avenue for milking people or an avenue for solving your financial problems by demanding or collecting bribes from motorists,” advised Mkandawire.

In his remarks, Regional Traffic Officer, Witness Kasonya assured the Commissioner that he will make sure that all Traffic Police Officers in the region and beyond, execute their work professionally.
