LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The chess gladiator Malawi Police Inspector Alfred Chimthere underlined his supremacy at the inter-security sports festival by winning gold through an unbeaten run in a tournament being played from October 10 to 14, 2022 at Bingu stadium in Lilongwe.

He won all his seven games including victories against second placed Yamikani Chakuluntha and third placed Maxwell Jonasi, both of Malawi Defence Force.

“These games are meant for interaction but i still have to safeguard the pride and legacy of our team and institution”, said Chimthere.

The soft spoken gold medallist won seven games, while Private soldier Chakuluntha and Corporal Jonasi won six and five games each, and went away with silver & bronze medals respectively.

There were 20 players from the security institutions including Malawi Defence Force, Police, Immigration and Prisons.

In the Ladies section, Sub-inspector Bertha Moyo netted gold with 3.5 points. She was followed by fellow police officers, Sub Inspector Edith Nkhoma and Sub Inspector Caroline Kachikho who accumulated 3 points apiece, but were separated using a tie-break.

The win by Chimthere comes hot on the heels of his scooping the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation (SARPCCO) bronze medal in Tanzania last month.
