MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Mzimba District Council has from today banned the sale of second hand clothes popularly known as salaula and cattle markets within the boundaries of the district as one way of combating the Pandemic of Covid 19.

According to a press statement released on March 25, 2020, the ban is with immediate effect.

“Due to the threat of Corona Virus and the urgent need to seriously manage it, the government declared state of disaster in the country from March 19, 2020. Consequently, government is restricting public gatherings to less than 100 people.

“In light of this declaration, M’mbelwa District Council, in its full council meeting of 25 March, 2020, has introduced a ban to prohibit operation of salaula markets and cattle markets within the boundaries of Mzimba District forthwith. The district council and the security apparatus will enforce the ban,” reads the letter partly.

The Council has further appealed to the general public to wash hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol, avoid handshakes, stop touching mouth and eyes, among other precautionary measures.

The World Health Organisation declared Covid 19 as a global Pandemic. The disease has by far claimed over 17, 000 lives worldwide.

Malawi has no confirmed case of Covid 19.

On Friday last week, President Peter Mutharika declared a state of disaster, prohibiting public gatherings to fewer than 100 people.
