Member of parliament for Mzimba North East Constituency who is also Speaker of the Malawi’s National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara, has added value to the girl child education after donating various building materials worth K10 million to different schools in her constituency for construction of girls hostels and teachers’ houses.
Speaking when he was handing over 40 bags of cement to Choma Community Day Secondary School; one of the schools in the constituency, Morgan Tembo, who is a councillor for Ekwendeni Ward, who represented Gotani Hara, said it is the dream of the Speaker to add value to the girl child education; not only in her constituency, but across the country, so that girls can achieve their dreams.
“This donation will provide the girl child with proper boarding facilities there by keeping her in school. Imagine at Choma School, girls forget that they can be in a boarding school!” said Tembo.
Tembo further disclosed that the donation is part of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) that government provides to members of Parliament for development of their areas.
Speaking after receiving the donation, deputy head teacher for Choma CDSS, Mr Leonard Nyirenda, said such a donation will go a long way in assisting girls around the community as it has come at a time most girls are falling prey for early marriages as they find it difficult to walk long distances when going and returning from school.
Besides bags of cement, other materials that have been donated to both primary and secondary schools, so far, are iron sheets, steel windows and door frames paints and ant termite chemicals, among others.
In January this year, Gotani Hara launched a quiz competition worth K2.5 million for primary and secondary school students in her constituency. The competition is yet to come to an end when schools reopen after the school calendar disturbances by Covid-19 pandemic.
