The suspect, identified as Chrissie Vitche Banda, is said to have been desperate of bearing a child for his husband.

She was arrested after being found nurturing the baby at her home village in the area.

The baby was stolen when the rightful mother, 28 year-old Lucia Clement left the newborn alone in the ward to receive breakfast. The baby had just received some treatment from doctors due to some complications it had born with.

It is at this point that Banda seized an opportunity to sneak into the room carry out his mission that was not only aimed at pleasing her husband but also to save her marriage.

“Upon coming back and realizing the baby had been stolen the mother reported the issue to the hospital authorities who together made a formal report to police about the development.

“Investigations to establish the whereabouts of both the stolen child and the thief were instituted until on Thursday December 5 2017 when information reached Mchinji Police concerning the woman who was spotted with no record of pregnancy but was nurturing a one week old baby at Chikhutu village in T/A Zulu’s area in Mchinji,.

“Some elderly women from the village mobilized themselves to inspect the woman if she had fresh labor signs, but they did not see any and went on to alert the Police who rushed to arrest and recover the baby,” said Mchinji Police Spokesperson Rome Chauluka.

The suspect, mother of three and got married to the current husband in May last year, revealed to the law enforcers that she had a three month pregnancy at some point for him, but miscarried in August and never informed the husband.

“She had planned to steal the baby. She presented herself to her husband with baby at Mologeni village where the two stays. However, the husband (Vitche Chimombo) became suspicious of the baby and persuaded her also to go with him to her home village where the elderly women examined the women,” explained Chauluka.

Chrissie Vitche Banda hails from Chikhutu village in the area of Traditional Authority Zulu in the district.

The suspect will appear before Mchinji Magistrate’s Court soon to answer charges of child stealing which is contrary to Section 167 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile the baby has been handed over to Mchinji District Hospital officials where they are proceeding with the special care which was supposed to be administered.
