MEC Chairperson Annabel Mtilamanja accused of failing to deliver judgement after four years

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Judge Annabel Mtilamanja, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), is facing accusations of failing to pass judgment in a case that has remained unresolved for over four years, according to court records.

A formal complaint has been lodged regarding her delay in delivering the judgment, raising concerns about judicial efficiency.

The case, which remains undisclosed, has been pending since 2019, sparking frustration among the involved parties.

The prolonged delay has raised questions about Judge Mtilamanja’s handling of her judicial duties, especially now that she holds a high-profile role as the head of MEC, a position that demands significant time and focus.

A legal representative for one of the complainants expressed disappointment over the extended wait, emphasizing that justice delayed is justice denied.

“It is deeply concerning that, after four years, we are still waiting for a judgment. We have officially filed a complaint to seek redress and ensure that the matter is resolved as soon as possible,” the lawyer said.

While Judge Mtilamanja has not yet publicly responded to the allegations, the matter has ignited debate over her ability to balance her responsibilities as both a judge and the MEC chairperson, particularly as the country prepares for the upcoming 2025 General Elections.

Legal analysts have pointed out that prolonged delays in the judiciary undermine public confidence in the legal system.

Some have called for reforms to address inefficiencies in the judicial process, including the introduction of stricter time limits for delivering judgments.

As the case gains public attention, the judiciary is expected to review the complaint and assess whether corrective measures are necessary.

In the meantime, the parties involved in the delayed case are left waiting for closure, as pressure mounts on Judge Mtilamanja to explain the reasons behind the extended delay.
