MZUZU-(MaraviPost)—Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has challenged President Dr Lazarus Chakwera not to apply selective justice when it comes to curbing corruption in the country.
Speaking yesterday after a meeting with the Malawi leader, PAC Spokesman, Bishop Clifford Matonga, said their leadership expects the Tonse Alliance to pursue cases of corruption across the board irrespective of whether the suspects are in opposition or in government.
“We discussed a number of issues; one of them being the issue to do with corruption. The government is doing everything possible to curb the problem of corruption in the government institutions. And we thought it was necessary to recommend them but at the same time, we did raise the concern that something the government should be able to consider.
“The fight against corruption must have a political will and as they do that, they must make sure that justice is not selective. We must ensure that all people that have committed crimes and are involved or engaged in issues of corruption; whether they in government; whether they are in opposition; whether they are big people or small people; everyone who has been involved in issues of corruption must be answerable. They must answer and be brought to justice and justice should not be selective,” said Matonga
Bishop Matonga also disclosed that issues such as Covid-19 pandemic and others were also tackled during the meeting but that their implementation is dependent on the political will by the government.
Meanwhile, Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP), a governance and advocacy arm of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has also appealed to Chakwera administration to see to it that there is comprehensive action in the pursuit against corruption in Malawi.
Since Tonse Alliance took over from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration in June this year, there has been a spate of arrests of the previous government’s top dogs on grounds of corruption, fraud and money laundering.
