Political maturity after 2025 elections victory, defeat: Mutharika vs Chakwera

Peter Mutharika vs Lazarus Chakwera

LILONGWE (MaraviPost)-In the often-unforgiving arena of Malawian politics, post-election behavior can define a leader’s legacy as much as their time in office.

Former President Lazarus Chakwera’s recent actions, however, have sparked debate over whether he could benefit from emulating the measured approach of his predecessor, Arthur Peter Mutharika.

After his defeat in 2020, Mutharika quietly retreated to his private residence at Page House, avoiding public drama and focusing only on matters of national importance.

He held occasional press briefings on issues affecting the country but refrained from interfering in government affairs in which he had no official mandate.

This restraint not only preserved his dignity but also helped maintain political stability.

By contrast, Chakwera’s decision to host his own Kamuzu Banda commemoration immediately following the government’s official event, and to organize a separate memorial for Vice President Saulos Chilima in Nthungwa while the family held theirs in Ntcheu, has drawn criticism from observers.

Chakwera teargassed for being nieve with power

Many argue that such actions risk undermining national unity and could heighten political tensions.

Political analysts suggest that Chakwera’s approach reflects a lack of political prudence.

“A former leader’s role should be guided by respect for national institutions and the will of the electorate,” one analyst noted.

“Peaceful withdrawal and selective public engagement, as demonstrated by Mutharika, are hallmarks of political maturity.”

Observers say that instead of asserting his presence in ways that may be perceived as provocative, Chakwera could focus on personal endeavors, community development, or quietly supporting causes aligned with his vision steps that could earn respect without stirring controversy.

In Malawi’s fragile political landscape, the lesson is clear dignity and discretion in defeat often speak louder than partisan displays of defiance.
