VATICAN (MaraviPost)–The head of Catholic Church, His Holiness Pope Francis on Tuesday, April 26, has appointed Reverend Father John Alphonsus Ryan of the Missionary Society to become the bishop for Mzuzu diocese replacing the late Jeseph Mkasa Zuza who died in a fatal road accident at Thungwa , Mzuzu in January 15, 2015.
In a press statement released on Tuesday afternoon and made available to The Maravi Post Pope Francis through Archbishop Julio Murat, Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia has appointed Reverend Father of the Missionary Society of St. Patrick as Bishop of Mzuzu.
This means that The Reverend Mons. Michael A. Muwowo, Diocesan Administrator of Mzuzu, remains in charge of the Diocese until the new Bishop will take possession of the Episcopal See of Mzuzu.
“His Excellency Archbishop Julio Murat, Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Zambia wish to announce that His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Reverend Father John Alphonsus Ryan of the Missionary Society of St. Patrick as Bishop of Mzuzu. This news will be published in the Vatican today, Tuesday April 26th at Noon time in the Vatican City”, reads in brief the Vatican statement.
In congratulatory message from Rev. Fr. Henry Saindi, Episcope Conference of Malawi (ECM)’s Secretary General expressed gratitude for the new appointment saying it was times and the appointee was legible for the position based on vast experience and education credentials.
“Fr. John Ryan (nicknamed Fr. Jere) is a Professor of Mathematics at Mzuni. He holds a PhD on Cryptology. JAR, as he likes to be called, is my friend and my former college chaplain. Congrats for this well deserved appointment,” lauds Fr. Saindi.
Fr. John Ryan was born in February 27, 1952 in Tipperary, Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly in Ireland and enrolled into St.Patrick Society-Kiltegan and studied Philosophy at the Institute of Cork,Douglas and in 1974 also studied Theology at the Institute of Kiltegan in county Wikclow.
The new Mzuzu Diocese Bishop Ryan was ordained as a priest on June 18 1978 and he has served various academic and pastoral roles including head teacher at Community Day Secondary School in Misuku (Mzuzu), head of Seminary at St.Patrick Seminary in Rumphi,chaplain of the Sister of Holy Rosary in Katete, taught mathematics in Ireland, Chaplain and professor of mathematics at Mzuzu University among others.
