His Excellency the State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has been appointed Champion for Higher Education in Africa. This appointment has been made by the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture ( RUFORUM).

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), established by ten Vice Chancellors in 2004, is a consortium of 46 African universities operating within 22 countries spanning the African continent. RUFORUM is coordinated by a Secretariat hosted by Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.

The statement released from Garden Hill, Makerere University Main Campus in Kampala- Uganda signed by Professor Adipala Ekwamu says the Appointment of President Mutharika is in recognition to His creation of a Continental Agenda to revitalize Higher Education in Africa so that the Continent has the required quality human resource and Institutions to support the Continent’s development agenda. Professor Adipala Ekwamu is one of the Vice Chancellors of RUFORUM.

President Mutharika has so far accepted the Honour to be Champion of Higher Education in Africa and he has also accepted to be a Voice for RUFORUM as requested to do so by RUFORUM.

RUFORUM supports universities to address the important and largely unfulfilled role that universities play in contributing to the well?being of small?scale farmers and economic development of countries throughout the sub? Saharan Africa region. The consortium has several unique features for building Africa’s innovation capacity and for engaging universities in development process and practice.
