President Lazarus Chakwera’s presence at the Mzuzu University graduation ceremony has sparked a range of reactions among the public. The ceremony, notable for its record number of graduates and the first PhD recipients, is marked by a mix of sentiments from attendees and observers.
Some social media comments highlight the significance of the event, with congratulations extended to the graduates and praise for Chakwera’s participation. Many view the President’s attendance as a positive gesture, celebrating the academic achievements of the students.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has advised the graduating students to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired after completing their studies at Mzuzu University.
In his address, Dr Chakwera emphasised the importance of applying problem-solving skills and actively participating in finding solutions to the challenges facing the nation.
He urged the graduates to use their education to contribute positively to the country’s development and overcome current issues
However, the ceremony is also overshadowed by expressions of sorrow and nostalgia. The recent passing of Vice President Saulos Chilima is mentioned, with comments reflecting a sense of loss and mourning. Some people express their regret over Chilima’s absence, contrasting it with their current sentiments towards other political figures.
The mention of “Professor Chikangawa” in the reactions appears to be a comment to a recent plane crash in Chikangawa Forest during which VP Saulos Chilima and 9 others died in the accident adding another layer to the public discourse surrounding the event.
Overall, while the graduation ceremony is a significant occasion for Mzuzu University, it also serves as a backdrop for broader reflections on current and past political figures.
