BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In the run-up to the next election in Malawi, the sentiment among poor Malawians is clear – they are demanding change.

The current Chakwera administration is facing backlash from its citizens who are struggling with high water board tariffs, electricity rates, and basic food prices. The call for cheaper essentials like maize, fertilizer, fuel, and passport fees has never been louder.

Poor Malawians are feeling the strain of the rising cost of living, with prices of essential items skyrocketing across the board.

Maize, a staple food in Malawi, is now being sold at exorbitant prices of 45,000 per bag, making it difficult for families to put food on the table.

Fertilizer prices have also soared to 85,000 per bag, putting further strain on farmers who rely on it for their livelihood.

The recent increases in water board tariffs and electricity rates have also hit poor Malawians hard, with many struggling to afford basic utilities.

The cost of living continues to rise, with fuel prices at 2,500 per litre and passport fees at 50,000, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to make ends meet.

In addition to the economic hardships facing poor Malawians, there are also concerns about the lack of development projects outside of the capital city of Lilongwe.

Many regions in Malawi are feeling neglected, with promises of health posts every 4 km remaining unfulfilled.

The skewed budget allocation, with the majority going to central regions, has left many feeling marginalized and neglected.

Furthermore, the administration’s handling of issues such as the MDF training scandal and the Nsundwe Barracks incident has raised questions about accountability and transparency.

Selective justice and the targeting of activists and journalists have added to the growing discontent among poor Malawians.

The call for change in Malawi is loud and clear. Poor Malawians are demanding a government that prioritizes their needs and addresses the issues that are affecting their daily lives.

The upcoming election will be a crucial moment for the country, as citizens decide whether to give the Chakwera administration another chance or demand better for their future.

It is time for the government to listen to the voices of the people and take action to address the pressing issues facing poor Malawians.

The call for change is growing stronger, and the next election will be a critical moment for the country’s future. The time for action is now.
