Lilongwe, June 6: Police in Lilongwe in the wee hours of Thursday confiscated four carcasses of cattle at Njewa along Mchinji road from unknown cattle rustlers who escaped upon encountering with police.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, told Media that unregistered vehicle, Mazda Station Wagon, blue in colour, was coming from Mchinji heading to Lilongwe and upon reaching Mpingu roadblock; the vehicle did not stop which made the police grow suspicious.
He said following this development, Mpingu Police Roadblock alerted Lilongwe police who in response deployed 990 zone patrol team which intercepted the getaway car between Njewa and Chitedze.
“When they run into the police the suspected criminals stopped their vehicle and bolted abandoning the unregistered car,” explained Dandaula.
But Dandaula said when the team inspected the vehicle; they discovered carcasses of four cattle each cut into two.
The police are yet to establish the owner(s) of the cattle as they continue intensifying the hunt for the suspected rustlers.
“It won’t be long before we get them since one of them forgot a cell phone in the vehicle and this will assist us to trace the suspects,” said Dandaula.
He appealed to the general public to refrain from buying meat or any meat products that they were not sure of the source to discourage the tendency of cattle rustling which he described as retrogressive.
