LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Suspected Malawi Congress Party (MCP) zealots on Friday, May 17, 2024 reportedly attacked Alliance For Democracy (AFORD) supporters in Mponera, Dowa district.
AFORD’s Director of Public Relations Chris Thaulo confirmed the attack on the party’s members.
The attack comes ahead of the mega rally which AFORD President Enoch Chihana wants to hold on Sunday in the area.
Thaulo said, “As hours are drawing closer for the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) to hold another Mega Rally in Mponera this Sunday after another successful rally in Chinsapo, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) thugs have attacked AFORD supporters.
“This follows ground preparation work by Aford members in readiness for the rally which is to be hosted by it’s President Rt. Hon. Enock Kanzingeni Chihana”.
Thaulo adds, “It has been proved that women were undressed, some beaten and many have been injured.
“This is a very sad development for our democracy. MCP should accept that Malawi is a democratic society and therefore every party should be allowed to enjoy this democracy”.
He urges, “Aford is therefore calling upon all security agencies to provide maximum protection to all Malawians regardless of their political affiliation.
“What has happened in Mponera is democratically uncalled for and is condemned in it’s totality. Let democracy be enjoyed by everyone”.
MCP authorities are yet comment on the matter.
This comes barely months after MCP zealots also attacked Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters in Lilongwe that till now no arrest has been made to the suspects.
