Being a bridesmaid is often a dream for many little girls second to being the bride themselves, however what most people don’t realize is that being a bridesmaid can actually be really expensive. If you’ve been asked by a friend or family member to be a bridesmaid you’re probably feeling excited and quite honored, however it’s important that you fully understand the costs of being in a bridal party so that you don’t end up overspending. If you’re not too sure about what exactly you’re going to need to pay for as a bridesmaid, we’ve put together this list to help you out.
The Dress
Unless you’re being a bridesmaid for a multi-millionaire who doesn’t mind buying all her bridesmaids gorgeous turquoise bridesmaid dresses as gifts, you’re most likely going to have to spend a bit of money on your dress. Some brides will pick the dress out for you whilst others are flexible enough to let you choose your own, but whatever your situation you should budget at least a few hundred dollars towards your gown.
Gifts
As a bridesmaid you’re an important part of the bridal party, so it would be rude to turn up without a gift. The gifts that you choose to buy for the bride and groom will obviously range in price depending on what you buy them, however it’s important not to miss gifts out of your budget – you won’t want to turn up with something cheap because it’s all you can afford!
Travel Expenses
Unless you’re lucky enough to be attending a wedding ceremony that’s around the corner from your home, you’re likely to be expected to pay for travel and even accommodation costs. If your friend or family member is getting married in another location or even abroad, you may find that costs for transport and a hotel room can add up. A great way to reduce the costs of travel and accommodation is to share with other bridesmaids wherever possible – splitting the cost of one room for three people will be cheaper than you all having your own room, or sharing a car to reduce on gas will save you some cash.
Hair and Makeup
It’s not only the bride who wants to look her best on the big day, you’ll also want to get pampered and look stunning alongside her. However, looking good usually comes at a price, and you’ll need to allow for beauty treatment costs as well. Decide what it is that you need to have done – the basics are eyebrow wax, manicure and pedicure, hair styling, and make up. However, if you’re lucky enough to be a pro at doing your own hair and make-up or have an experienced friend who’ll do it for free, you might be able to save yourself some money.
Have you ever been a bridesmaid? How much did the whole process cost you, and did any costs take you by surprise? If you have any advice for other bridesmaids, we’d love to hear from you in the comments.
