KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-About 22 people have died while 12 others have escaped with injuries of various degrees after a vehicle they were travelling in overturned in Tenenthe Hills, Karonga, at around 8pm on Saturday, June 3, 2023.
According to Karonga Police Station publicist George Mulewa identified the driver as Moes Mkandawire 43, who was driving a 10-Tonner Lorry, Registration Number NA 6449 with 80 passengers on board from Chitipa to Karonga District.
“Mkandawire carried players and supporters for Nyungwe Football Club and upon arrival at Tenenthe, he failed to negotiate a left bend of the road which resulted in the vehicle overturning after it hit the road’s embarkment.
“17 people died on the spot due to severe head injuries and fractures while 12 others sustained various injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Karonga District Hospital,” said Mulewa.
The driver Mkandawire hails from Mchekacheka Village,Traditional Authority (T.A) Mwilang’ombe in Karonga District.
Meanwhile investigations are still underway to get full details of the others.
But death toll is reportedly to be at 25.
