Trump’s Republicans launch bitter attack on ‘foolish’ Pelosi over impeachment games

WASHINGTON-(MaraviPost)-DONALD TRUMP’S Republicans have mocked the impeachment strategy of Democrats as “foolish” and “absurd”, as the impeachment process remains in limbo.

The second phase of impeachment requires a trial in the Senate, where Senators will have the final say on whether Trump is kicked out of office.

However, Democrats are worried that the Republican controlled Senate will not implement a fair and impartial trial and will vote along party lines to dismiss the case against the US President.

The Democrats Senate leader, Chuck Schumer, told reporters: “Mitch McConnell (Republican Senate leader) has no intention of conducting a fair trial, no intention of acting impartially, no intention of getting the facts.”

As a result, House Speaker Ms Pelosi is refusing to send the impeachment articles to the Senate until she has assurances that Senate Republicans will uphold their Constitutional obligations to hold a proper and non-partisan trial.

Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich slammed Ms Pelosi’s political manoeuvres as naïve and absurd, claiming that she lacked the strategic acumen to play tick tack toe, let alone a game of political chess.

Appearing on Fox News, he said: “She can’t negotiate with Mitch McConnell.

“McConnell is one of the most formidable leaders in the history of the Senate. She has no leverage over him at all. She ends up looking foolish.

“Every day that this goes on, Pelosi is going to look sillier and sillier and the Democrats are going to look more and more narrowly political and partisan.

“And frankly that is not a very good place to be.”

In exasperation at the tactical naivety of the Democrats he added: “Part two of this entire dance is the Republicans in the Senate.

“McConnell and Lindsey Graham – why would you start a fight in the House knowing you are going to lose control of it to people who are very capable of making you look very foolish?

“And yet that’s the dance they began.”

Mr Gingrich argued that Ms Pelosi was a hostage to the left wing of her party, that were forcing her to adopt positions contrary to her sound political sense.

The result was that the Democrats were simply helping President Trump make his point that the impeachment was politically motivated and “not real”.

He concluded: “This is not a real impeachment. Nothing about it is real.

“The whole process from Adam Schiff’s secret meetings to Nadler’s trivially short Judiciary Committee meetings.

“This whole thing is a joke and it will go down in history as the impeachment that never was.”

Mr Gingrich’s comments come as a leading lawyer from the Democrats own impeachment legal team sensationally claimed that Trump had not been legally impeached.

Noah Feldman, a Harvard Law professor, insists that until the impeachment articles are sent to the Senate, the US President is guilty of nothing under the Constitution.

Writing in Bloomberg Mr Feldman said: “If the House does not communicate its impeachment to the Senate, it hasn’t actually impeached the President.

“Impeachment as contemplated by the Constitution does not consist merely of a vote by the House, but of the process of sending the articles to the Senate for trial.

“Both parts are necessary to make an impeachment under the Constitution.

“If the articles are not transmitted, Trump could legitimately say that he wasn’t truly impeached at all.”

Last Wednesday the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to impeach President Trump on two counts of abusing the power of office and of obstructing Congress in its investigations.
