KIEV-(MaraviPost)-An American journalist, Brent Renaud, was killed and another wounded by Russian forces in the town of Irpin outside the capital of Kiev on Sunday, March 13, 2022.
Andriy Nebytov, the head of Kiev’s regional police force confirmed the news adding that Renaud was killed when Russian troops opened fire on a vehicle ferrying media practitioners in the area.
According to another US documentary filmmaker, Juan Arredondo, who was with Renaud at the time of the incident, he and Renaud were on their way to film people leaving Kiev when they crossed a checkpoint and came under fire.
ACB reported that the award-winning journalist was shot in the neck and was left behind when the rest of the team he was traveling with got split.
His body was discovered wearing a New York Times press badge alongside his American passport and other media credentials.
The spokesperson for the New York Times said Renaud had contributed to New York Times over the years, most recently in 2015.
Reports however indicate that he was not on an assignment with New York newspaper at the time of the incident.
The 50-year-old filmmaker died instantly while the other wounded journalists were taken to the hospital to be treated for various injuries.
In denouncing the shooting, the Committee to Protect Journalists has called for Renaud killers to be brought to justice.
Before his demise, Renaud was a Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker, producer, and journalist, who lived and worked in New York City and Little Rock, Arkansas and in 2019, he was Harvard Nieman Fellow.
