MZUZU-(MaraviPost)—Youth and Society – YAS has called upon government and Teachers Union of Malawi -TUM to resolve the current teachers’ industrial action in form of a stay away by Friday lest it seeks legal redress as one of the alternative interventions in the impulse.
Speaking on Wednesday during a press briefing held in Mzuzu, Head of Programs at the organisation, Arnold Simwela, said the two sides have to continue with their discussions without really impinging on the rights to education of the learners in the country.
Simwela further disclosed that the organisation also plans on mobilising the citizenry to hold demonstrations to petition the government should classes not resume by Friday this week.
“So, we intend engage both the President of TUM and the government to make sure that they end their impulse by Friday before we take our own direction,” said Simwela.
Meanwhile, another education rights activist organisation, Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has indicated plans to hold regional meetings for nationwide demonstrations if government does not manage to successfully end the stand off with teachers.
On Tuesday this week, teachers across the country put down their chalk and dusters; in a second phase of the stay away, in a bid to force government to pay them Covid-19 risk allowances. The teachers are demanding a three month once off payment of the allowance of K50, 000 per month across the board.
