Atupele Muluzi tries to clean up his statements on Peter Mutharika’s age

UDF Leader Atupele Muluzi

In his own words sharing on social media ….

I have noticed that remarks I made during last year’s campaign regarding President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika continue to be discussed by some, particularly the statement that “it is time for him to rest.”

I wish to clarify this respectfully and sincerely.

My remarks were never intended as an insult, attack, or expression of hostility toward President Mutharika. I fully recognize and respect the democratic choice Malawians made in electing him President at the age of 85. That decision must always be respected.

My comments were made in the context of the immense demands that the Presidency placed on any individual, especially during a period of serious economic hardship and national difficulty. They were rooted in concern for governance, leadership transition, and the need for every political movement to consciously prepare and empower the next generation of leaders.

This was not about disrespecting age or diminishing President Mutharika’s contribution to Malawi. Far from it. President Mutharika remains an important national figure whose experience and service to our country deserve recognition and respect.

At the same time, I believe strong governance requires strong institutions, delegation, and the meaningful utilization of all constitutional offices, including that of Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah. Malawi functions best when leadership responsibilities are shared effectively in service of the people.

Political differences should never be confusing with personal hostility. We can debate ideas while still respecting one another and remaining united by our love for Malawi.
