In a surprising move, Manchester United has officially announced the departure of Erik ten Hag as head coach, marking an abrupt end to his tenure with the club. Ten Hag, who was appointed in April 2022, leaves with two domestic trophies under his belt, having led United to victory in the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
In a club statement, Manchester United expressed its gratitude for ten Hag’s contributions: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
The decision to part ways with ten Hag comes amid a challenging season for United, with mounting pressure from fans and stakeholders due to inconsistent performances. Despite the achievements of the past two seasons, recent struggles on the pitch appear to have catalyzed this significant change in leadership.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of Manchester United on an interim basis after Erik ten Hag was sacked with the club 14th in the Premier League table.
The former United striker has been installed as head coach and will be supported by the current coaching team at Old Trafford whilst a permanent appointment is made.
Van Nistelrooy returned to Manchester United in the summer as Ten Hag’s coaching staff was overhauled, with Rene Hake and Andreas Georgson also recruited.
