Mkandawire, is the MCP Vice President for the Northern Region

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s civil rights body Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives( CDEDI) is challenging President Lazarus Chakwera to publicly distance himself from the retrogressive and highly insensitive remarks his Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Vice President for the North Harry Mkandawire made over the weekend at a political rally.

In a press statement released on September 6, 2020 made available to The Maravi Post, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa observes Mkandawire’s remarks were unaccepted considering not only MCP forms Tonse government.

“CDEDI has learnt with shock about Mr. Mkandawire’s remarks were captured in an audio which has now gone viral on social media, repeating the very same mistakes made by the previous government which is in sharp contrast to what the Tonse Alliance promised Malawians.

Mkandawire made highly insensitive and derogatory remarks to the Vice President Dr. Saulosi Chilima”, reads part of the statement.

Namiwa challenges; “In the same unwarranted political overzealousness, Mr. Mkandawire is heard giving instructions to prioritise members of the MCP when government starts giving out the MEDEF loans, simply because they belong to the ruling party.

“While CDEDI is condemning the remarks in strongest terms, it is also appealing to President Chakwera to discipline Mr. Mkandawire”.

Harry Mkandawire’s speech, that he delivered at the weekend during a campaign rally in Karonga Central Constituency, has sparked fire between Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party supporters.

Mkandawire, who is the MCP Vice President for the Northern Region, was heard telling the rally attendants that it is MCP diehards who will be recognised first to access Medef loans when government resumes administering the same to Malawians willing to access it and start up various business activities.

Stressing his point, Mkandawire said it is Chakwera whose face appeared on the ballot papers during the June 23, 2020 fresh presidential election and it was he who was later sworn in as the Head of State and Government, therefore, his children (MCP supporters) cannot be deprived of the loan while Chakwera is in government.

Mkandawire further challenged the rally zealots that the loan accessing forms that were issued by the then DPP are nullified and new ones will be printed and be given to MCP supporters first.
