CHIKWAWA-(MANA)-President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday symbolically switched on power supply under the Malawi Rural Electrification Program (MAREP) phase 9 at Nkudzi Primary School in Chikwawa District.

Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola emphasized the transformative potential of energy in boosting economic growth and enhancing livelihoods.

“Energy is the driver of the economy and an enabler of development,” Matola said.

He observed that with electricity now available, learners in the community will have the opportunity to study at night and this will improve educational outcomes.

“Additionally, maize mills will be more accessible within the community, reducing the distance people need to travel for essential social services,” said Matola.

In his remarks, Senior Chief Maseya concurred with the minister on the benefits of electrification.

“Where there is electricity, development follows. I am confident this power supply will bring about more growth and improve the quality of life for our people,” said Maseya.

The MAREP 9 initiative is part of the governments effort to extend electrification to rural areas, driving socio-economic development and reducing poverty.

MAREP 9 has 19 sites across Chikwawa District, with nine of the sites already connected to the grid.
