Church and Society engages Malawi Govt Anti-Quota Movement

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Church and Society, an arm of the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, which more often presses the Government on checks and balances has finally courted the latter and the anti Quota Movement on the contentious issue of Quota System.

Speaking on Wednesday, during a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a classroom block at Mzuzu Government Secondary School, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), Justin Saudi, said they have gone a long way in their talks with Church and Society’s Executive Director, Moses Mkandawire, and they have made a positive headway.

Saidi was responding to the sentiments recently made by anti Qouta Movement which purports that most of the boarding schools in the Northern Region have students from the Southern and Central Regions at the expense of those from the north.

“We are working with Church and Society of the Livingstonia Synod and we have made strives. You know as government we listen to views of others and select point from there to implement,” said Saidi.

However, current Spokesperson for the anti-Quota Movement, Reverend William Mumba has expressed ignorance about the role of the Church and Society.

“We have no idea what is going on between Church and Society and the Ministry. What we know is that the Ministry is not responding to our petition. So, maybe they are sidelining us, but I don’t know what’s going on, ” said Mumba. Lately, there was a change of leadership in the Movement with Moses Mkandawire being removed as the Chairperson of the same.

Surprisingly, it is the same Mkandawire through Church and Society who coordinates talks between the Government and the anti Qouta Movement.
