DPP must fire Kondwani Nankhumwa to end internal party fights now: Why?

By Burnett Munthali

It is quite surprising why Kondwani Nankhumwa is clinging to the position of Leader of opposition. He was not elected by the opposition Democratic Progress Party (DPP) but he wants to represent the party.

It also baffles me why the DPP cannot fire Kondwani Nankhumwa for clinging to the position of Leader of opposition. The DPP did not elect him but why is he left free to represent and confuse the party with court injunctions?.

DPP wants to replace Nankhumwa with George Chaponda

Let me say something about the performance of the leader of opposition in Parliament. Kondwani Nankhumwa’s performance so far as leader of opposition is below par. His leadership style in Parliament is laissez fair.

Nankhumwa is obviously serving someone else and not his party President. He is serving the government side for sure.

For sure, the last budget session went without any critical scrutiny because the leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa doesn’t understand his role yet. He just wants to be there as a figurehead doing nothing but enjoying the privileges of the office of the leader of opposition. That’s all.

Kondwani Nankhumwa is failing as leader of opposition to aggressively fight against corruption, nepotism, high cost of living because he is generally not a fighter. He speaks with some air of importance around him so he is regarded like a king. We need a better leader of opposition than Nankhumwa. Probably, George Chaponda is far much better than the inexperienced Kondwani.

Succession Planning

Succession planning is a process through which The DPP must ensure that the right leaders are recruited and developed to fill each key role within the party.

In this process, DPP must ensure that there is no key role open for which another leader is not prepared.

Kondwani Nankhumwa, for sure, must be fired now and not later.

Stop him from using party materials. Use every way possible to fight him. Use the party constitution or amend it and kick this guy out. Otherwise, the party followers are getting confused too.

Separation of Powers

I don’t really know if powers in the government of Malawi are separated. They seem to be mixed up.

Section (35 of the Malawi Constitution clearly stipulates that a political party is entitled to choose a leader of opposition.

However, the courts can grant someone an injunction stopping a party from recognizing a leader of opposition it wants to work in Parliament. What is the meaning of these laws we have?

Supporting the party President

Kondwani Nankhumwa was a loyal DPP member in the beginning. This is a different Kondwani we are seeing now.

He has chosen not to support his party President because maybe he is copying from Dr Saulos Chilima when he was leaving the DPP.

Kondwani Nankhumwa has chosen not to support his party President because maybe he is complacent that he is now capable to lead the DPP.

He has chosen not to support his party President maybe he is working for someone else.

Kondwani Nankhumwa has chosen not to support his party President because maybe he wants to start his own party in the near future.

Whatever reasons Kondwani Nankhumwa has, he must be fired from the party or keep him and DPP drowns into the Red Sea.

Party Legacy

Before the first term of Nelson Mandela of South Africa came to an end, he announced Thabo Mbeki as the potential successor who would take over from him.

It is the legacy of many parties for the outgoing president to appoint his own successor of choice who at a later stage competes with other interested contestants at a party convention. And such leaders do it for the love of the party to move forward.

Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika could be absolutely right in his choice because he has worked with everyone in the party, therefore he is better placed to suggest a strong torch bearer who could fare very well in 2025.

The people ha e the right to choose but often times, people end up choosing the wrong leaders because they do not fully know their candidates.

Kondwani Nankhumwa respected Bingu Wa Mutharika. I don’t know why he chose to respect Bingu and not Prof Arthur Peter Mutharika today.

Does Nankhumwa consider himself more valuable in the party than his party President even before he is chosen at the convention?

Has Kondwani Nankhumwa crossed the bridge already? Let’s wait and see what happens at the convention in 2023.

Respect is paramount irrespective of your position in the party because everything may backfire soon or later.

Respect is due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others.

Many young people lack respect for their seniors, that’s why their leadership is always full of rudeness. They are always in when hurry to do things.

Kondwani Nankhumwa’s disrespect is coupled with his young age. He thinks he is wiser than the leaders more senior than him.
