BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The ruling Democratic Progressive Party on Wednesday welcomed political prodigal son Augustine Mtendere and other twenty one People’s Party (PP) members at a rally in Lilongwe .

Mtendere who served as deputy minister in the late Bingu Wa Mutharika administration, confirmed of the defection to the state-controlled Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) saying it is right time to work with President Mutharika.

“I have no choice but to join DPP. I have withdrawn my membership from PP,” he said.

He further said “I am convinced with Peter Mutharika’s leadership, the way he started since ascending to power. I cannot remain in a party (PP) which is engulfed with leadership wrangles.”

On his part, DPP’s Secretary General Ecklen Kudontoni said Mtendere has made a right choice.

“As a party we are happy with the coming of new members. This simply shows that DPP is very strong and people have confidence in it.

“PP is divided. There are two factions fighting for leadership and the members who have joined us could not manage to stay in such a party,” said Kudontoni.

Recently, DPP also welcomed veteran politician Gwanda Chakuamba.
