KINSHASA-(MaraviPost)-Democratic Republic of Congo has cancelled its planned World Cup training camp and a farewell event for supporters in Kinshasa following growing concerns over an Ebola outbreak that has reportedly claimed more than 130 lives and resulted in nearly 600 suspected cases.
The decision affects a three day training camp that was scheduled to bring together the national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
Football authorities had also organized a special farewell gathering to allow supporters to interact with the squad before its departure for the tournament.
Officials said the move was made as a precautionary measure to safeguard players, technical staff and fans amid the ongoing public health situation.
The cancellation means the team will no longer assemble in the Congolese capital before heading into the final phase of its preparations.
The outbreak has placed health authorities on high alert, with efforts intensifying to contain the spread of the disease.
Concerns over large public gatherings are believed to have influenced the decision to call off the football related events.
Despite the setback, preparations for the World Cup will continue.
The national team is expected to regroup outside the country, where players and coaches can focus on training without the uncertainty created by the health crisis at home.
Most members of the Congolese squad are based overseas, particularly in Europe.
A significant number of players feature for clubs in France, making it easier for the team management to organize preparations away from central Africa.
Head coach Sebastien Desabre is also based abroad and has been working closely with players scattered across different leagues.
The French tactician is expected to oversee the team’s final preparations as Congo seeks to make a strong impression on the world stage.
However, authorities deemed public safety more important than holding the gathering.
The cancellation highlights how health emergencies can affect major sporting activities, even at the highest level.
While the team remains committed to its World Cup ambitions, the situation has forced officials to adjust their plans at short notice.
