DOWA-(MaraviPost) – Five people on Monday escaped death after Axa bus which they were travelling in caught fire at Namanda bus Deport near Nthonje Trading Centre, Mvera in Dowa district.
The victims who sustained minor injuries were rushed to Chankhungu Health Centre where they are being treated as outpatients.
Dowa police station publicist Richard Kaponda told The Maravi Post that the victims struggled to disembark from the AXA Bus which accidentally caught fire and burnt to ashes on the spot around 1500hours.
Kaponda said bus registration number, AXA 14, driven by Thomas Nervis Chirwa, 65, with 16 Passengers on board was coming from the Direction of Salima going towards Lilongwe along Lilongwe Salima road.
He added that upon arrival at Namanda bus deport, the bus stopped when one passenger wanted to answer a call of nature.
“It was at this time when fire was spoted from the engine. Police Officers were informed and they rushed to the scene, and managed to rescue the 16 passengers including the driver.
“But all the properties were burnt to ashes. Investigation is under way to find out the cause of the fire and the value of the properties’ destroyed,” said Kaponda.
The AXA bus driver hails from Mdyaka Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Fukamapiri, in Nkhatabay district.
