LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Social media content creator Hanna Jabesi, popularly known as Tamia Ja, has spoken publicly about her sexual orientation that she is a Lesbian.

Jabesi disclosed that her attraction to fellow women is a natural part of who she is.

In a recent video shared online, Jabesi explained that she has always had feelings for people of the same gender.

She said past attempts to form relationships with men were unsuccessful, despite making deliberate efforts to do so.

“I even forced myself to be with men, but it never worked despite the fact that I got pregnant and gave birth to a child,” she said, adding that she sought medical, traditional, and spiritual interventions in hopes of changing her orientation, without success.

Jabesi also dismissed claims that she identifies as a lesbian for financial gain, describing such assertions as misguided.

“Some girls text me asking what they should do to start earning money by being lesbian. But this is not about money, it’s how I was born,” she said.

She noted that her decision to speak out was driven by persistent questions speculation surrounding her personal life.

Her remarks come amid ongoing debate in Malawi over the rights and recognition of sexual minorities.

Same-sex relationships remain criminalised under Malawian law, and members of the LGBTQIA community often face stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion.

However, human rights advocates continue to push for greater acceptance.

Michael Kaiyatsa, Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), recently stated that it is time the country respects individuals regardless of their sexual orientation.

“It is okay to belong to such a community,” Kaiyatsa said, urging society to uphold principles of dignity and human rights for all.
