LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a surprising turn of events, independent members of Parliament have outnumbered those of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), potentially altering the leadership dynamics in the House.
According to unofficial results circulating on social media which Maravipost has seen,the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secured 89 seats, while independent candidates won 69 seats.
The MCP, now the opposition party, garnered 52 seats, and the United Transformation Movement (UTM) secured 8 seats.
With the MCP no longer holding the majority, the fate of the opposition leader hangs in the balance.
In the previous Parliament, George Chaponda served as the leader of the opposition, while Richard Chimwendo Banda led the House from the government side.
Khumbize Kandodo was the government chief whip, and Jappie Mhango was the opposition whip.
Independent-led Opposition with 69 seats, independent members might potentially assume the role of opposition leader, depending on potential alliances and agreements.
The MCP could explore forming an alliance with the UTM and other parties to strengthen their position in the House.
DPP might seek to build relationships with independent members to secure their support for key legislative initiatives.
According to Parliament Public relations office,August House convenes in October dates yet to be communicated.
The country’s attention will focus on how the parliamentary leadership will be determined and how the lost government MPs will adapt to their new roles.
