MCHINJI-(MaraviPost)-Malawi is receiving much-needed maize imports from Zambia, with 103,000 metric tonnes of the 200,000MT procured already entering the country through the Mchinji-Mwami border.
The grain is being transported from Zambia’s Food Reserve Agency silos in Chipata to Malawi’s National Food Reserve Agency in Lilongwe under police escort, with both local and international transporters involved in the effort.
As of today, fifty-six trucks are entering Malawi, bringing the total to eighty-eight trucks that have hauled the maize since January 1, 2026, providing relief to millions of Malawians facing hunger.
Malawi procured the 200,000MT of maize from Zambia worth K137 billion with support from the World Bank, aiming to feed over 4 million hunger-stricken Malawians across the country.
Agriculture Minister Roza Mbilizi previously stated that the dispatch of the consignment will be completed before March this year, with Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo Phiri expressing his government’s commitment to facilitate timely delivery ¹ ² ³.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to address Malawi’s food security crisis, with the government working to stabilize maize prices and ensure access to staple food for vulnerable populations.
