LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-President Arthur Peter Mutharika has announced a sweeping reshuffle of his cabinet, reconfiguring several key ministerial positions in a move aimed at strengthening the government’s performance.

In the latest changes, former Lands Minister Jappie Mhango has been redeployed to head the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, taking charge of the country’s infrastructure development agenda. Chimwemwe Chipungu, who previously served as Defence Minister, has swapped portfolios with the Minister of Lands and Housing, assuming responsibility for land management and housing projects while former Transport Minister Feston Kaupa now occupies the Defence Ministry, becoming the new Minister of Defence.

The reshuffle also sees former Minister of State Alfred Gangata appointed as Minister of Natural Resources, tasked with overseeing the nation’s environmental and resource management policies.

The presidential directive, exercised under Section 92(1) of the Constitution of Malawi, reflects an effort to realign ministerial expertise with national development priorities.

Analysts are watching closely to see how the new appointments will influence policy implementation in transport, defence, lands, and natural resources.

The changes are expected to bring fresh perspectives to the ministries, with Mhango focusing on improving public works and transport infrastructure, Kaupa handling national security and defence strategies, and Chipungu addressing land and housing challenges.

Gangata’s new role in natural resources signals an increased emphasis on sustainable management of Malawi’s environment and mineral assets.

The cabinet reshuffle has generated mixed reactions among political observers, with some praising the move as a strategic realignment of experienced leaders to critical sectors, while others anticipate potential challenges in policy continuity.

President Mutharika’s administration asserts that the reassignments are part of a broader initiative to enhance governance efficiency and service delivery across various sectors.

The new ministers are expected to assume their duties immediately, working to address pressing issues such as infrastructure development, land reforms, defence readiness, and environmental conservation in the coming months.
