ACB spokesperson Ndala: confirms the arrest of Masamba

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a Member of Parliament for Mangochi East Constituency, Honourable Franscica Masamba, for allegedly soliciting an advantage from one of the interviewees for the position of Director of Office of the Directorate of Public Officers Declarations (ODPOD) in order to influence the outcome of the interview in favour the interviewee.

 According to a press statement ACB issued on November 5, 2020, on 24th August this year, the institution received an allegation that the parliamentarian, who is also a member of Public Appointment Committee of Parliament corruptly solicited sums of money ranging from K1 million to K2 million in order to influence the decision of the committee.

After some investigation, on 5 November, 2020, ACB arrived at the decision of arresting the parliamentarian, who, according to the institution, is likely to be charged with corrupt use of official powers and misuse of public office contrary to section 25 (1) and 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act respectively; and she will be taken to court after thorough investigation into the matter.

If Masamba is found guilty in the court of law, she will automatically lose the parliamentarian seat, a development that will call for by-election in the constituency.
