LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 closed down the later former President Bingu Wa Mutharika’s family Galaxy FM radio in the capital Lilongwe.
According to MACRA inside sources told this publication that the station owes huge taxes not paid over the years.
But other sources dispute the claim arguing that the move is to muzzle the station which was very critic to Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera’s Malawi Congress Party (MCP) during the Democratic Progress Party (DPP) which the Mutharikas were trusted with power.
“I was at an assignment at capital Hotel, immediately I return back to office along Likuni road, just found offices closed, then I hard to return back waiting for station manager to tell us what to do next,” says one of the station’s reporters.
The Maravi Post is yet to establish how much tax the station owes MACRA.
Before June 23, 2020 presidential election, MACRA was on Times Group which was critic to DPP’s President Peter Mutharika leadership.
Times Group which is owned by MCP founder Dr. Kamuzu Banda has been adopted by Chakwera’s Tonse administration that keeps on pampering the current leadership.
