LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Education Minister Dr. Susuwele Banda on Saturday disclosed that government will introduce rural hardship allowances to teachers.
Dr Banda justified the decision following general outcry that teachers in rural areas encounter challenges when executing their duties.
The minister told Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) Annual General Meeting ( AGM) underway in the capital Lilongwe that considering distance teachers take to access resources, the ministry thought of covering them up.
On much talked Quota system of selecting primary school pupils to secondary school, Dr Banda said the system will no longer apply on national secondary schools.
He was however quick to say that no district secondary schools will accommodate other pupils from other districts.
“The ministry will introduce rural hardship allowance to teachers to caution their mobility challenges. This will be a motivating factor to work in rural areas.
“We have heard much on quota however the ministry decision to remove the system on national secondary school selection. But districts and community secondary school selections remains intact”, says Banda.
CSEC Board chair Mosses Busher insisted on total removal of quota system in public schools that students be selected on merit.
This year’s AGM meeting under the theme, “NGOs making a difference in the education sector: Leave No one Behind”, aligns itself to the global vision to deliver SDGs 4.
The meeting drew all membership across the country.
