Lilongwe, June 18: Government says one of its major contracts in this years’ 2015/16 of the Ministry of Health is to construct a New Phalombe District Hospital as a referral health facility to all health centres within and nearby districts.
The sited area for the hospital is Migowi, which is according to the Minister of Health Dr. Jean Kalilani, who disclosed this response to a question by Dennis Namachekecha Member of Parliament (MP) for Phalombe North East in Parliament Thursday.
Namachekecha asked the government to construct a health centre in Mauzi Ward, providing mobile clinics and upgrading Nambazo health centre to a rural hospital as it is the only health centre in the constituency.
The minister said she was aware of the need to construct the health centre at Mauzi Ward and providing mobile clinics in the area.
“Madam First Deputy Speaker Madam, Mauzi Ward has a population of over 15, 000 and people travel 8 kilometers to access health services at Gogoma health centre the nearest health facility,” explained the minister.
Dr Kalilani said the construction of the health clinic will be included in the Ministry’s Capital Investment Plan for Phalombe District Health Office (DHO).
She said the ministry through Phalombe DHO conducts clinics in Mauzi Ward and that the ministry will intensify for national mobile clinics in the area through health surveillance assistance to ensure that health care services are literally accessible.
“Nambazo health centre has a catchment population of about 17, 000 and it is located 13 kilometres from Phalombe health centre the currently referral facility in the district and about 6 kilometers from Migowi the site where Phalombe district hospital will be constructed,” said the minister.
She said Nambazo will therefore benefit from the Phalombe district hospital as its referral health facility since the health centre is just few kilometers away from Migowi.
