
LILONGWE (Maravi Post)—The Malawi high court in Mzuzu on Tuesday summoned Dr Ronald Mangani who is the Secretary to the government treasury to clarify himself for defying the court order to compensate families who lost their beloved ones during the historical 20 July, 2011 demonstration.According to the Mzuzu high court Judge Dingiswayo Madise, Mangani should appear before the court on Wednesday 24 August, 2016.
Confirming the development to Maravi Post, one of the lawyers for the bereaved families George Kazipatike said they have also been informed by the court.
“We have indeed been invited by the high court tomorrow. The main agenda is to know why the treasury failed to bow down to the court’s order of compensating the 20 July, 2011 believed families,” said Kazipatike.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance Nations Msowoya also told this reporter that Mangani will appear before the court.
“We are also aware about that as government, but court should expect Dr Mangani tomorrow as it stated,” said Msowoya.
On 17 March this year, the Mzuzu high court ordered the treasury office to compensate the 20 July demonstration bereaved families with K31, 204, 792 million.
However, the treasury office has been mum on the matter a development which made the court to summon Dr Mangani.
About 20 innocent people lost their lives on the 20 July, 2011 demonstration.
