MACHINGA-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi court in the eastern district of Machinga has sentenced a 25-year-old man to a 40-month-jail term for being found guilty of indecent assault and malicious damage.
Machinga Police Station Spokesperson Davie Sulumba has identified the convict as Gilbert John who committed the offence contrary to Sections 137 and 344 of the Penal code, respectively.
According to Sulumba the court heard that the convict, on January 10 this year, went to Likwenu Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) where he had indecently assaulted a 19-year-old Form 4 student by fondling her breasts and buttocks.
The police publicist said John sexually assaulted the girl while serving her school punishment , and that the convict went further damaging the school property such as plastic chairs valued at MK3,000, claiming that the school owned him money for the job he did in the past.
“The convict pleaded guilty to both charges during the trial. Although Gilbert pleaded for forgiveness, Second Grade Magistrate Maxwell Boazi slapped him with a 40-month-prison sentence for indecent assault and 9-month-sentence for the malicious damage which will run concurrently.
“In the ruling Magistrate Boazi argued that the sentence would act as a lesson to other would-be offenders”, said Sulumba.
John hails from Nkalo Village in Traditional Authority (T.A) Nkula in Machinga district.
