Machinga man jailed 12 years for defiling stepdaughter

MACHINGA-(MaraviPost)-Machinga First Grade Magistrate Johns Masula on Thursday, convicted and sentenced a forty-five year old-man to 12 years in jail with hard labor, for defiling his sixteen-year-old stepdaughter.

Machinga Police station spokesperson Davie Sulumba, identified the convict as Kanyenga Damson, who married Margret Iman and whom he found with four children, including the victim.

According to Sulumba, the court heard that Damson together with wife and step children, were staying under the same house, whereby he took advantage of the victim, a standard five pupil at primary school in the district.

The police publicist said Kanyenga started having carnal knowledge with the young girl two years ago (2015), and the victim was coaxed with MK500.00 each time they had sex.

However in 2016, the wife notices some changes in her daughter. Upon quizzing her, she revealed that she was pregnant.

Although it culminated in a miscarriage after suffering from malaria, she never disclosed the person responsible for the pregnancy.

“Nevertheless, speculation on Kanyenga’s malpractice became rife in the village. That prompted the mother to press her daughter further. She then revealed that her step father persistently had sex with her. Following the tip, the Police at Ntaja in Machinga, moved in quickly to arrest Kanyenga.

The convict pleaded guilty, but state prosecutor Rodrick Kamuona asked the Court to impose a stiff punishment to the convict so as to give a warning to other would-be offenders because such cases are common in the area, Said Sulumba.

In mitigation, the convict asked for the Court’s leniency arguing that he is a first offender and also breadwinner. Masula however, concurred with the Prosecutor, hence he slapped the suspect with the custodial sentence.

The convict Kanyenga hails from Wadi village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Liwonde in Machinga district.
