Malawi Police arrest NB bank teller over K36 million theft

Mangochi, April 28, 2015: Police have arrested 27 year old James Nansongole, a National Bank teller at Mangochi Branch for allegedly stealing K36 million, Malawi News Agency has learnt.

The district’s Police Publicist, Inspector Rodrick Maida said Nansongole had been fabricating transactions without corresponding cheques and vouchers to withdraw millions of kwacha for personal use since January 2015.

 

“This was discovered by new management and when quizzed the suspect failed to account for the cash,” Maida said.

The suspect will appear before court Tuesday to answer charges of fraudulent false accounting and theft by servant contrary to sections 335 and 286 of the penal code respectively, according to Maida.

Maximum penalty for theft by servant is 14 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour-IHL whilst fraudulent false accounting attracts a maximum penalty of 7 years IHL.

Nansongole hails from Masuku Village Traditional Authority Kadewere in Chiradzulu.
