Malawi leader Peter Mutharika has appointed Dr. George Chaponda as Leader of House in Parliament replacing Francis Kansaila.
Diploma holder press officer for Malawi President, Mgeme Kalirani, said that the appointment is with immediate effect. He said that the appointment of Chaponda has been necessitated by the recent appointment of Kasaila as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation.
“It is necessary to allow Kasaila to effectively attend to Malawi’s international affairs which often demand a lot of travelling out of the country. Therefore, it became necessary to allow someone to take over the position of Leader of the House so that both positions are given the due attention they deserve,” reads part of the statement as signed by Kalirani.
Mutharika thanked Honourable Francis Kasaila for performing exceptionally well as Leader of the House during his term and further wished Dr. George Chaponda well in his new role in Parliament.
The appointment of Chaponda comes a day before Malawi Parliament opens for the 2016 to 2017 financial year budget session.
