Chakwera gets Covid-19 vaccination

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has described the Covid-19 vaccination as a life saving drug in the face of the incessant pandemic of the novel Coronavirus.

Speaking during the launch of Covid-19 vaccination program at Zomba Covid-19 field hospital, Chakwera said the vaccine is a major milestone in defeating the virus and so it is very necessary for people to receive the vaccination to protect lives.

Chakwera further said what the pandemic has left to the nation is there for everyone to see.

“Few days from now, it will be exactly one year since our war against Covid-19 began, when a state of national disaster was first declared across Malawi because of the pandemic. Since then, the pandemic has robbed us of our freedoms, shut down our businesses, destroyed our jobs, disrupted our travel, distorted our communal lives and destabilized our institutions.

“Most painfully, the Coronavirus has infected over 32 thousand of our people and taken 1,077 of our loved ones. 82 percent of who have died, during the second wave, just began seventy days ago. Without question, our Heath workers have been our soldiers in this war; they have conducted over 100 thousand tests, they have helped nearly 25 thousand infected people recover, they have even over five million hours of sacrificial selfless service to our Covid-19 isolation centres. We will all win the battle,” said Chakwera.

The Malawi also had time to inspect the field hospital before he received his Astrazeneca jab.

In her remarks Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chuponda, appealed to Malawians to avail themselves to receive the vaccination, saying the jabs are effectively helping so many people in other countries.

At least 30 thousand people tested positive for the virus since it was first detected in Malawi on April 2, 2020 and 1,077 of them died of the virus while others recovered.
