MACHINGA-(MaraviPost)—Malawi Sheikh Abu Bakr has asked Malawi government to follow what the Quran and the Bible say in dealing with wave of killings of albinos, whose body parts are used for witchcraft.
Abu Bakr said this on Sunday in Machinga at Ntaja trading centre during discussions on albino killings beamed live on MBC monitored by Maravi Post ahead of “International Albinism Awareness Day” which will take place in Kasungu on Monday.
Abu Bakr said the albino killers should be dealt with in line with the teachings of the Quran and the Bible.
“We the religious leaders, we are guide by the law of God. And everyone including the Police, ministers gather in Churches and Mosques. The Bible and the Quran advise us to pray for one God. So we are worried that people in Machinga are doing contrary to the God’s laws.
“The God’s law is that a thief should be amputated their hands in recompense for what they committed as a punishment from Allah. So we religious leaders are set to hold meetings with police, ministers and all traditional leaders to let God’s laws take its course,” he said.
He added: “We are going to ask government officials to allow us dealing with these evil people using the Quran.”
Countries that use supreme law of the Quran have earned themselves criticisms from the world human rights watchdogs arguing they violate the human rights of the culprits.
Malawi has been hit by wave of albino attacks. At least 18 people with albinism have been killed since November 2014, and five more are missing, according to an Amnesty International report released in May 2016.
Amnesty says police have not done enough to investigate the crimes, and the punishments doled out are too lenient.
