Malawi Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima, on Wednesday assured families affected by floods in Karonga in the northern region, that government will support them with a variety of relief items.
Chilima made the remarks after visiting the victims and destroyed crops; and he promptly threatened to discipline officers that try to steal the relief items at the district council.
According to Karonga District Commissioner (DC) Richard Hara, 4 people died while 3 others are missing following the heavy rains.
Hara further said that 5520 households have been displaced by the floods, including several hectares of crops and large number of livestock.
Paramount Chief Kyungu, advised the beneficiaries not to sell the relief items.
Among the deceased include a 4-year old boy Robert Mwakiyera, Hilda sumbi (52) from Traditional Authority (TA) Mwakaboko, and 70-Year old John Mtambo of Mwangulukulu village in TA Mwakaboko.
Karonga is one of the disaster prone district in the country.
