The police are currently keeping in custody the driver of the vehicle for causing death by dangerous/reckless driving which is contrary to section 126 of the Road Traffic Act.

Mchinji police station spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino has identified the deceased as Madalitso Mbizi and the 40 year-old driver as Davie Chapata.

Police Publicist Lubrino told the Maravi Post that the deceased was in the company of other four loaders (passengers) on this fateful day and were on transit to Lilongwe from Zambia using Scania vanned truck registration number NS6447, whilst carrying six hundred bags of 25 kilograms maize flour through unchartered routes.

Lubrino added that in the course of travelling and upon reaching at Poko village at around 03:30 hours the deceased, Mbizi, who coincidentally hailed from the same village was reported to have slipped-off to the tarmac through the rear door of the van.

Following this impact the deceased sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot. An autopsy examination conducted at Mchinji District Hospital has also established that death occurred due to serious head injuries.

“The driver is in police custody pending to appear before court when investigations are concluded. We are therefore appealing to all road users to be more conscious and should seriously and always observe road traffic regulations in order to minimize all avoidable road accidents in the district and the country in general”, urges Lubrino.

The late Mbizi hailed from Poko village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Mkanda while the truck driver Chapata originates from Zicheta village, T/A Mavwere, both in Mchinji district.
